The implementing regulation (EU) 2021/2090 has just been published in the OJEU. It concerns the refusal of authorisation of titanium dioxide (E 171) as a feed additive for all animal species.
TiO2 was authorized without time limit by Directive 70/524/EEC as a colorant in dog and cat food and in food for all animal species under certain conditions.
An application has been submitted for the re-evaluation of this additive, to classify it in the category of "sensory additives" and in the functional group of "colourants: substances that add or restore colour to animal feed".
In May 2021, EFSA published an opinion showing that it has not been established that titanium dioxide does not have an adverse effect on animal health, human health or the environment when used as a feed additive in the functional group of "colorants: substances that add or restore colour to feed".
The authorization of titanium dioxide (E 171) as a feed additive of the category "sensory additives" and of the functional group "colorants: substances that add or restore color to animal feed" has therefore been refused.
Existing stocks of TiO2, as well as premixtures containing it, must be withdrawn from the market by March 20, 2022.
Feed materials and compound feeds produced with this additive or premixtures containing it before March 20, 2022, shall be withdrawn from the market by June 20, 2022.
Your Phytocontrol laboratory is able to detect and characterize titanium dioxide nanoparticles using its latest generation technology.
