Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018/555 of 9 April 2018 concerning a multiannual and coordinated EU monitoring programme for 2019, 2020 and 2021 to ensure compliance with maximum levels for pesticide residues in and on food of plant and animal origin and to assess consumer exposure to those residues was published on 10 April 2018.
This Regulation will enter into force on 1 January 2019.
Thirty to forty foodstuffs constitute the main components of the diet in the Union.
Since pesticide uses change considerably over a three-year period, pesticides must be monitored in these foodstuffs over a series of three-year cycles in order to assess consumer exposure and the application of EU legislation.
The control will cover 683 samples selected for 36 different food products.
The sampling of these samples shall be distributed among the Member States according to population, with a minimum of 12 samples per product per year.
The targeted matrices will be as follows:
From 2019: Apples, Strawberries, Peaches, Nectarines, Wine, Lettuce, Head cabbage, Tomatoes, Spinach, Oat grains, Barley grains, Cow milk and Pig fat.
By 2020: Oranges, Pears, Kiwifruit, Cauliflower, Onions, Carrots, Potatoes, Dried beans, Rye grains, Brown rice (husked rice), Poultry fats and Sheep fats.
Out of 2021: Table grapes, Bananas, Grapefruit, Eggplant, Broccoli, Melons, Country mushrooms, Peppers/Sweet peppers, Wheat grains, Virgin olive oil, Cattle fat and Hen eggs.
