The European Commission has published Regulation (EU) 2024/1987 amending Regulation (EU) 2023/915 as regards the maximum levels for nickel in certain foodstuffs.
Nickel is present in foodstuffs and can be of natural or anthropogenic origin. According to EFSA's 2015 scientific opinion, nickel can have both chronic (risk of miscarriage) and acute (eczematous rash) effects.
Maximum levels have been set for the following categories:
As some of the foodstuffs covered by this regulation have a long shelf-life or can be processed into products with a similarly long shelf-life, products legally placed on the market before the regulation's implementation date are allowed to remain on the market.
These limits will apply from July 1er 2025.
