EFSA has put out for consultation its opinion on genetically modified maize MZIR098 intended for food and feed use under Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 on GMOs. The public consultation is open until 27 July 2020.
The Scientific Panel on Genetically Modified Organisms of the EFSA (GMO Panel) has been asked to carry out a scientific evaluation of MZIR098 maize for import, processing and food and feed uses.
MZIR 098 maize has been developed to confer tolerance to herbicides containing glufosinate ammonium and resistance to certain beetle pests.
The GMO Panel considered that MZIR098 maize was as safe as its conventional counterpart and that the non-GM maize reference varieties tested for potential effects on human and animal health and the environment.
