On 5 February 2020, the Permanent Representatives Committee (COREPER) of the Council confirmed the provisional agreement reached on 18 December 2019 with the European Parliament on the proposal for the revision of Directive 98/83/EC on the quality of water intended for human consumption.
The draft updates the water quality criteria and introduces a risk assessment.
Requirements for materials in contact with water have also been included in the text.
New substances are included in the control plan, including the addition of endocrine disrupters and medicinal products (beta-oestradiol, nonylphenol, bisphenol A). These amendments will be adopted one year after the entry into force of the Directive.
The Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) is expected to vote on the compromise agreement on 18 February 2020 and the political agreement will be submitted to the Environment Council at its meeting on 5 March 2020.
The directive will enter into force 20 days after its publication in the OJEU.
