On 21 January 2019, the European Commission published a draft regulation on the establishment of EU MRLs for the active substance Chlorate.
To date, the EU MRL for chlorates is set at 0.01mg/kg, the default MRL, on all matrices.
All authorisations for plant protection products containing chlorate have been withdrawn following Decision 2008/865/EC.
Chlorates can also come from the use of chlorinated disinfectants in food but also from treated drinking water.
For several years, discussions have been ongoing between Member States to set up EU MRLs. In the meantime, several countries have their own national MRLs.
The consultation of this project is therefore a real step towards the European harmonisation of chlorate regulation.
