In its press release of 5 March 2019, the EU Council announced that it had adopted its position on the proposal to revise the EU drinking water directive.
This future directive provides in particular for :
- A risk-based approach to water quality monitoring
- Modification of water quality assessment criteria
- New provisions on materials that come into contact with drinking water
- Improving access to drinking water
One of the major changes in this project is the updating of the current standards for water quality (parametric values and analytical parameters). These standards were set 20 years ago and have not been revised since.
At its plenary session on 23 October 2018, the European Parliament proposed amendments to the Commission's proposal.
It is expected to establish its position at first reading for the second plenary in March.
Inter-institutional negotiations will probably take place during the Finnish Presidency on 1 July 2019.
